Israeli PM Orders Offensive in Gaza Following Ceasefire Violations

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to initiate a strong offensive in the Gaza Strip. This decision follows what Netanyahu’s office termed “repeated violations” of the already fragile ceasefire with Hamas.

The announcement was made late Monday after a high-level security meeting that included top defense officials like IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Helj Halevi and Defense Minister Yoav Galant. They gathered to assess Israel’s reaction to the rising tensions in the region.

The current ceasefire, which went into effect on October 10, was established after weeks of negotiations led by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt. The aim was to end large-scale hostilities while facilitating the return of hostages and humanitarian aid.

However, in recent days, tensions have escalated.

Israel has accused Hamas of failing to fulfill promises regarding the return of Israeli hostages and attacking IDF forces in southern Gaza near Rafah. Conversely, Hamas claims that Israel has violated the ceasefire by maintaining a military presence and delaying the delivery of aid.

The spark for Netanyahu’s order appears to be an incident where Hamas gunmen opened fire on IDF soldiers, resulting in one death and two injuries. Israel labeled this a “clear violation of the ceasefire.”

The situation has also been complicated by disagreements over the remains of hostages. Israeli officials reported that Hamas had postponed the return of some bodies promised in the ceasefire, opting instead to return other remains. On Monday, Hamas delivered a body through the Red Cross, which was identified the next day as belonging to Ofir Tsarfati—a hostage already recovered in 2023. This was seen as a “replacement” for a body that was never provided.

It was also revealed that Hamas might be keeping additional remains, including fragments, and has allegedly staged the “discovery” of these bodies, with drone footage allegedly showing operatives burying and then exhuming them in front of Red Cross representatives. Netanyahu’s office asserted that this was a deliberate infringement of the ceasefire agreement.

Meanwhile, local reports indicate preparations are underway for air and artillery strikes targeting Hamas infrastructure in southern and central Gaza, though specifics remain undisclosed. Early Tuesday, there were reports of Israeli military planes and explosions near Khan Yunis and Rafah. While the IDF hasn’t confirmed these details, they stated readiness for any scenario. A high-ranking Israeli security official indicated the planned response would be “broad and decisive,” yet emphasized it wouldn’t lead to full-scale war unless provoked by Hamas.

Egypt and Qatar have urged both sides to exercise restraint, and the U.S. State Department expressed deep concern over recent developments, calling for actions that would prevent large-scale conflict.

Analysts note that the upcoming days will be crucial in determining if Israel’s actions will be limited retaliation or if they signal a complete breakdown of the ceasefire. As of Tuesday morning, Israeli forces reportedly remained on high alert along the Gaza border, with southern Israeli residents advised to stay close to air raid shelters in preparation for potential reprisals.
