Reba McEntire gets emotional on 'The Voice' while recalling her stepson Brandon Blackstock

Reba McIntyre recently became emotional during an episode of “The Voice.” In Monday’s show, the 70-year-old country icon shed tears after contestant Aubrey Nicole performed Martina McBride’s “I’m Gonna Love You Through It” in the first Knockout Round of Season 28.

After the performance, fellow coach Snoop Dogg expressed that even though he didn’t know the song, he felt moved by how Nicole sang it. He handed McIntyre a tissue as her emotions surfaced, saying, “I know this song. It’s Martina’s song. I’m going to need it, thanks, Snoop.”

McIntyre shared, “Martina is a good friend of mine. I lost my oldest son because he couldn’t beat cancer. It really reminded me that life goes on. The reason we sing songs about life is to remember the people we love and rely on in times like this. You did a great job.”

The song itself tells a poignant story about a couple navigating a cancer diagnosis, featuring lyrics like, “Cancer doesn’t discriminate or care if you’re still 38/Even if I have three kids who need you in their lives.” Nicole dedicated it to her father, who previously battled cancer and is now in remission.

McIntyre experienced a personal loss recently, as her stepson, Brandon Blackstock, passed away in August after a private struggle with melanoma. She was married to his father, Narvel Blackstock, from 1989 until 2015.

Following his death, McIntyre took to social media to honor him, sharing several photos. She wrote, “Last week, my son-in-law and oldest son, Brandon Blackstock, went home to be with God. His struggle is over and he is in eternal peace with God. There is no one like him, and I’m grateful for the time we spent together. His legacy and laughter will be passed down through our family. Rest in peace, Cowboy. Until we meet again, may you have a happy journey.”

In addition to Brandon, McIntyre also considers Narvel’s daughters, Chasidy and Shauna, her own children. Although she and Narvel separated in 2015, she continues to embrace his children from his previous marriage.

Reflecting on their relationship, McIntyre said, “I really loved him. I think he came into my life when he was four years old, and when Narvel and I got married, he was 13 or 14. I helped raise him with his mom and dad. They were my children.” She described him as “a very funny guy” who loved pulling pranks. “His mischievous spirit and love of life will be missed; we will never forget him.”

Brandon was married to Kelly Clarkson from 2013 to 2020, and they have two children, River and Remington. Despite the ups and downs, the memories they made together will linger on.
