Republicans Propose Bill to Address Illegal Aliens Driving Trucks

Republicans have put forward a bill aimed at reducing the number of illegal aliens operating commercial trucks in the U.S.

“It’s reckless and unacceptable to let illegal aliens drive commercial trucks on our roads,” commented Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill.), who introduced the Stop Evading Alien Driving Act (SAFE) last month.

The SAFE Act proposes to cut federal funds to states that issue licenses to illegal aliens, placing responsibility on states for the commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) issued within their jurisdictions. It also directs federal agencies to create a public database to monitor compliance across states.

“My Safe Driving Act would ensure accountability by withholding federal transportation funds from states that grant CDLs or regular driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants, or fail to provide immigration data to federal authorities,” Miller added.

In September, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy revealed plans to remove nearly 200,000 illegal alien drivers from highways.

One notable case involved Harjinder Singh, an undocumented Indian citizen, accused of making an illegal U-turn on a Florida highway and crashing into a tractor-trailer, resulting in three fatalities. In another incident, Jashanpreet Singh, also an illegal Indian immigrant, allegedly crashed into several vehicles in California while impaired.

Recently, President Donald Trump signed an executive order reinstating the Truck Driver English Proficiency Act.

Additional congressional support includes Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN), and Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY), who has proposed the Safe Commercial Driver License Act of 2025 to prevent illegal aliens from acquiring commercial driver’s licenses.

“If you’re driving a truck in the U.S., you need to be fluent in English. This isn’t just about safety; it’s common sense and it protects the public and law enforcement. Americans shouldn’t feel unsafe on the road, whether they’re dropping off kids or heading to work,” Tuberville stated.
