Israeli Prime Minister Orders Airstrikes After Hamas Incident
On Tuesday night, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed airstrikes against Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip following a disturbing incident involving the group. Hamas had claimed to return the body of one of its hostages who had died the previous day, but the assertion was ultimately proven false.
As part of a ceasefire arrangement established earlier this month, Hamas is expected to return 28 bodies, though only 15 have been delivered thus far, leaving 13 unaccounted for.
Reports indicate that Hamas was recorded on video digging a hole, placing human remains into it, and then inviting the Red Cross to witness the retrieval of the bodies. The remains were later sent to Israel in a coffin via the Red Cross. Tests revealed that the body belonged to a hostage who had been killed two years ago during a special military operation.
Shosh Bedrossian, a spokesperson for the Israeli government, stated during a news conference that Israel believes Hamas is aware of the locations of all remaining bodies, suggesting that the locations of nine out of the 13 are known.
This maneuver by Hamas has provoked outrage among Israelis, especially in light of an unprovoked attack earlier this month that resulted in the deaths of two soldiers. Although Israel had chosen to uphold the ceasefire at that point, military actions resumed on Tuesday.
In a brief statement, Netanyahu’s office announced, “Following security consultations, Prime Minister Netanyahu has instructed the military to carry out an immediate armed offensive in the Gaza Strip.”
Israeli Army Radio noted that airstrikes targeted the Deir al-Balah region in central Gaza.
Currently, the US has yet to respond publicly. President Donald Trump previously remarked that Hamas would face destruction if it failed to comply with conditions outlined in a 20-point plan aimed at fostering peace in the region.
