Emergency Landing Due to Alleged Stabbing on Lufthansa Flight
On October 25, a Lufthansa flight from Chicago to Frankfurt was unexpectedly diverted to Boston Logan International Airport following an incident where a man reportedly stabbed two teenagers on board with a metal fork during a disturbance, according to authorities.
Federal prosecutors have charged Praneeth Kumar Ushiripalli, a 28-year-old Indian national, with assault. This situation unfolded on Lufthansa Flight 431, prompting the emergency landing.
Prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts stated that Ushiripalli faces one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, allegedly with the intent to cause harm while traveling in U.S. airspace. The incident occurred shortly after meal service when a 17-year-old passenger woke from a light sleep to find Ushiripalli looming over him.
According to reports, Ushiripalli stabbed the sleeping teen in the left collarbone and then targeted another nearby 17-year-old boy, striking him on the back of the head with the fork. This second victim sustained a laceration as a result.
When the flight crew intervened, Ushiripalli reportedly mimicked a gun gesture with his hand, indicating a troubling escalation of the situation.
It has also been reported that Ushiripalli turned toward a female passenger and slapped her, before attempting to do the same to a flight attendant. The disturbance ultimately led to law enforcement being waiting on the ground in Boston for Ushiripalli’s arrest.
Interestingly, prosecutors noted that he had entered the U.S. on a student visa and had been pursuing a master’s degree in Biblical studies, though he currently lacks legal immigration status.
Ushiripalli is expected to appear in federal court in Boston at a later date. Airlines and safety on flights have been increasingly scrutinized, and incidents like this raise alarming questions about passenger security.
