Changes on Canal Street Amid Immigration Crackdown
Canal Street in New York City has been known for its bustling scene of illegal vendors peddling counterfeit designer goods. However, recent footage captured by a Turning Point USA reporter, Savana Hernandez, went viral and seems to have sparked a shift in this dynamic.
Following the release of Hernandez’s video, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted a raid on Canal Street, resulting in the arrest of nine undocumented individuals, some of whom had prior criminal records.
Hernandez recounted her experience, saying, “I was driving for Uber and came across this large group of African vendors selling bags on the sidewalk. It was packed with people, and I thought I’d check it out.” In her video, she noted that many of the migrants claimed to be from Senegal. She observed how quickly they scrambled to hide their products when they noticed her filming: “Within just a couple of minutes, they were in their cars and gone.”
During her conversation with one of the migrants, he admitted they lacked permits to sell wallets and feared losing their merchandise if caught by the police.
“I have no proof that DHS is aware of my video. All I know is it gained a lot of attention—like, about 5 million views. Some were even mocking me, saying, ‘Welcome to Canal Street, this has been happening for years,'” Hernandez recalled. “But I shared it because I thought, ‘Hey, this has been an issue for too long. Let’s do something about it.'” She anticipated that ICE would take further action soon.
“From what I’ve heard, they’re still cleaning up this area,” she added.
In a separate commentary, Gonzalez reflected on the situation, noting, “It’s peculiar how there’s an ongoing debate about whether it’s wrong to apprehend illegal individuals, especially given their criminal backgrounds.” She questioned why there wasn’t more urgency to remove them from the city.
