Tragic Incident in Buffalo Involves Deaths of Young Mother and Newborn
A financial aid adviser from a New York college has been accused of killing his girlfriend and setting fire to their apartment, where authorities found their four-day-old baby dead.
Kidan Hale, 30, allegedly strangled 29-year-old Kathleen “Katie” Carrig in their Buffalo apartment on October 18. Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keene stated that Hale is believed to have committed the act before igniting a fire in the residence. Tragically, their newborn son, Noah Carrig, was also discovered dead in the apartment, and the circumstances of his death are still under investigation.
On Thursday, Hale was charged with second-degree murder.
Statement from the University at Buffalo
Heil was employed as a financial aid advisor at the University at Buffalo. In response to the incident, the university issued a statement expressing condolences but refrained from discussing personnel matters. “Our hearts go out to those who are grieving this loss,” they said. They also noted their established procedures for handling situations involving employees accused of criminal activity.
Keene expressed sorrow over the situation, emphasizing the loss felt by both families involved. He mentioned that his office has already secured an indictment against Hale for allegedly killing Carrig before the fire started. A thorough review of evidence is underway, and additional charges may follow.
The judge has ordered Hale to be held without bail as he awaits his arraignment.
