Trump Discusses Meeting with Xi Jinping

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump shared some insights about his anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, indicating that it could last a few hours.

Trump made these comments during a diplomatic dinner held by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. He mentioned that their meeting scheduled for Thursday morning would likely span “three to four hours,” expressing his optimism as they settled in for the meal.

“It’s going to be very satisfying for China and for us. I think it’s going to be a very good meeting. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow morning,” Trump stated.

Additionally, he expressed his belief that the ongoing tensions between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korea would “go very well.”

Departure for Asia Amid Missile Launch

Trump’s remarks came as he departs for Asia, amidst North Korea’s ballistic missile tests and ongoing trade issues with China.

“I have neighbors who have not been very kind to me in the past,” Trump said, adding, “I know Kim Jong Un very well and I think things will go well.”

Earlier this week, he indicated a willingness to meet with Kim while in South Korea, reflecting on their past encounters during his first term, where he became the first U.S. president to meet with a North Korean leader. Although, the specifics of this week’s meeting remain unconfirmed.

The conversation between Trump and Lee is taking place as the two nations work towards a new trade agreement.

Henry Haggard, a former U.S. Embassy official in Seoul, noted that “Mr. Trump’s main purpose in meeting with Lee Jae-myung is to secure a trade deal and the accompanying $350 billion in investment in the United States.” He added that “Mr. Lee will also promise a stronger stance on China and encourage increased defense spending.”

Lee, leading a left-wing administration, has shown some hesitance to deepen U.S.-South Korea ties, possibly to avoid provoking China.
