Eagles’ Controversial Tush Push Play Sparks Debate After Giants Game

In a recent matchup, the Philadelphia Eagles’ notable “tush push” play drew attention during their 38-20 victory against the New York Giants. This happened when quarterback Jalen Hurts reached for a first down and his attempt was interrupted by Giants defensive end Kayvon Thibodeau, who seemingly recovered the ball. The Giants appeared to score after recovering, but the officials canceled the play, allowing the Eagles to retain possession with a first down instead.

Head coach of the Giants, Brian Daboll, didn’t hide his frustration over the call. Just two plays later, the Eagles scored a touchdown, pulling ahead 14-7.

Former Eagles center Jason Kelce mentioned that the referees might have made a mistake, calling it a “fumble,” and expressed his irritation in a podcast episode. His brother Travis pointed out that the referees decided that Hurts’s forward momentum stopped before reaching the first down line, creating a dilemma — it had to be categorized as either a fumble or a turnover on downs. Instead, the Eagles moved on with a first down.

Jason echoed Travis’s sentiments, insisting that Hurts’s momentum was hard to stop. He believed that if the “tush push” is difficult to officiate, perhaps it should be banned altogether.

He added that while he understood the challenges referees face during games, he stood by the play itself, stating, “I don’t see how this relates directly to the push play, since officiating issues can arise in various situations.”

Interestingly, there were discussions earlier this offseason about banning the Eagles’ signature play. Owners voted 22-10 against it, which was just shy of the necessary 24 votes needed to enforce a ban.

The Eagles’ victory against the Giants improved their record to 6-2 as they head into their bye week.
