Hockey star shares Trump's inspiring call before game against Canada

U.S.-Canada Hockey Rivalry Heats Up

The hockey rivalry between the U.S. and Canada intensified during the 2025 NHL Four-Way Tournament in February. The atmosphere was charged, with fans booing each other’s national anthems, and the players even had a brawl just nine seconds into the match.

Tensions had been simmering prior to the tournament, particularly after President Trump implemented tariffs on Canada, sparking a trade conflict. In light of this situation, Trump took the initiative to rally the U.S. team before their crucial match against Canada.

Brady Tkachuk, a prominent player on the U.S. team, shared his thoughts during a press conference at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee Media Summit. He emphasized how significant Trump’s call was for the team’s morale as they approached such an important game.

Tkachuk expressed, “It was great to have a president who cared about our team and wished us all success in our work.” He reflected on the magnitude of the moment, noting the pressure involved. “You realize you’re not just playing for yourselves. You’re playing for those who got you here, the ones who protect us every day. It’s bigger than the game; it’s for the entire country.”

This call, he believed, would leave a lasting impression as they geared up not only for the tournament but also for the upcoming Winter Olympics where they would face Canada again. “As we move into February, it’s about representing the country and playing at our best,” he said.

A video of Trump’s call showcased him praising the American players’ talent. He remarked, “You guys are really talented. I have a lot of respect for hockey players. I love hockey.” Throughout his speech, while smiles were exchanged among the players and coaches, they maintained a composed demeanor.

Trump went on to encourage them, stating, “Your skills are incredible. I want you to go out and enjoy yourselves. Best of luck to you all.” A chuckle spread among the players when Trump said, “No pressure at all.”

He closed with encouragement: “Go out and have fun. We love America and we love you guys. Let’s bring it home!” Despite the rallying cries, the U.S. ultimately lost the match in overtime, 3-2.

With the Winter Olympics approaching, international tensions are only escalating, particularly in hockey. Recently, President Trump halted trade discussions with Canada, citing an incident where he felt Canada tried to take advantage of him.

On October 14, Ontario’s government released an ad quoting Ronald Reagan’s 1987 radio address, stating that trade barriers harm American workers and consumers. This ad did not sit well in the U.S., prompting Trump to cancel further discussions after a meeting with Canada’s prime minister.

On Truth Social, Trump commented on Canada’s actions, stating, “Canada was tricked and caught! President Reagan’s ad misrepresented his views on tariffs.” In response, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation claimed the ad campaign selectively misrepresented Reagan’s words.
