Schumer Noncommittal on Mamdani’s Candidacy
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) hasn’t made his stance clear regarding a vote for socialist candidate Zoran Mamdani in the upcoming New York mayoral election.
When asked by a reporter if he supported Mamdani in the November 4 election, Schumer stopped short of a specific answer.
“The bottom line is very simple,” he stated, sidestepping the question. “We have a good relationship with him and we continue to have discussions.”
This lack of a decisive response comes soon after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) publicly endorsed Mamdani. In a statement, Jeffries acknowledged some “areas of principled disagreement” with Mamdani but emphasized the need for Democrats to unite against what he sees as an “existential threat” posed by President Trump. Jeffries praised Mamdani for his commitment to tackling the affordability crisis and for being inclusive of all New Yorkers, regardless of whether they support him.
“In that spirit, I support him and the citywide Democratic ticket in the general election,” Jeffries added, showing a willingness to embrace more progressive elements within the party.
Jeffries’ endorsement isn’t particularly surprising, as he has been advocating for Mamdani for some time. The mayoral candidate has been vocal about his socialist views, which include a proposal for a socialized grocery store system and the belief that addressing some crises should be handled by mental health professionals rather than police.
Moreover, Mamdani has faced criticism for not supporting resolutions that recognize Israel or denounce the Holocaust, and he’s been ambiguous on controversial phrases like “globalizing the intifada.”
In response to President Trump’s harsh criticism, labeling Mamdani a “communist lunatic,” Jeffries defended him. “Please stop lying about Congressman Mamdani. He is not a communist or a lunatic,” he posted in response, adding that New York City doesn’t need a “wannabe king” to fix its issues.
Schumer’s ongoing silence about his support for Mamdani has raised eyebrows, especially as the government faces shutdown while Democrats have repeatedly opposed attempts to pass a clean continuing resolution.
