Jeffries Criticizes Trump’s Nuclear Testing Announcement
On Thursday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York condemned President Trump’s commitment to restart U.S. nuclear weapons testing, labeling it a blatant violation of international law.
“Resuming nuclear testing seems like a significant breach of long-standing international treaties,” Jeffries commented while speaking to reporters at the Capitol. “This is just another instance of Donald Trump and the Republican Party pushing policies too far and, frankly, being out of touch with reality.”
During a speech on Wednesday, President Trump highlighted that the U.S. possesses the largest nuclear arsenal globally, but he voiced concerns over China’s growing military capabilities, suggesting that competition might equalize within five years.
Prior to a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating, “Given other nations’ testing plans, I’ve ordered the Department of the Army to commence nuclear testing on an equal footing.” He added, “That process will begin immediately.”
Some of Trump’s allies in Congress expressed support for his stance, framing it as a demonstration of American strength aimed at fostering global peace.
“The president’s public declaration about wanting to maintain a complete nuclear arsenal signifies deterrence. It’s crucial for us,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) during a Thursday press conference at the Capitol.
Conversely, Jeffries expressed concern over Trump’s recent focus on international matters, including two trips to meet foreign leaders, rather than addressing pressing domestic issues like a potential government shutdown that could impact benefits for many low-income Americans.
In light of this, Trump’s commitment to nuclear testing highlights, according to Jeffries, a detachment from what truly matters to the American public. “That’s why we, as Democrats, are consistently dedicated to lowering the high cost of living in this country and addressing the healthcare system that has been jeopardized by Republicans,” Jeffries remarked.
