Massie Responds to Vance’s Criticism
Kentucky Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has responded to Vice President J.D. Vance after Vance criticized him for frequently opposing party lines.
During an event at the University of Mississippi on Wednesday, Vance talked about the continuation of Turning Point USA’s campus tour, held in memory of Charlie Kirk. He welcomed questions from a crowd of students.
One student questioned why Donald Trump took issue with Massie, expressing concerns that such conflicts might hinder independent thought within the GOP.
Vance admitted, “This is difficult for me.” He recalled that Massie was among the first to discuss his book and political views with him, indicating a prior friendship.
He mentioned that it’s one thing to disagree on specific issues but something else entirely to consistently take independent stances. Vance conceded that he shares some of Massie’s independent views but noted a critical issue: “When you vote against your party on every issue, you end up making too many enemies.”
According to Vance, Massie’s consistent unwillingness to align with party votes has affected his standing with Trump, stating, “If you always vote against a party, you can’t expect that party to actually support you.”
In his defense, Massie argued that a demand for complete conformity could alienate a segment of voters who might not agree with every party stance. He positions himself as someone unwilling to be a “yes-man,” citing specific grievances with party leadership.
He reflected on remarks made by TPUSA attendees, emphasizing that while he aligns with the Republican platform most of the time, the lack of room for dissent is concerning. Massie insisted that excessive demands for compliance could ultimately narrow the party’s appeal.
He passionately stated, “When the leaders of my party protect sex traffickers and fund endless wars… it is true that I will not be their yes-man.”
