Immigration Enforcement in Chicago on Halloween
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced on Thursday that immigration enforcement operations will be “in full force” in Chicago this Halloween.
During an interview on Fox News’ “America Report,” Noem dismissed Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s request to pause Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities for the holiday season, suggesting it would allow children to enjoy trick-or-treating without the worry of facing federal agents.
When asked if she’d adhere to Pritzker’s suggestion, she firmly replied, “No, we’re going to be out in the streets and stepping up our efforts to keep our kids safe.” She mentioned that they arrest individuals involved in serious crimes like murder and child exploitation on a daily basis in Chicago.
Noem added that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is committed to ensuring the safety and enjoyment of the holidays for families and communities, stating that they aim to protect children from becoming victims of crimes perpetuated by illegal aliens.
Pritzker has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration’s ICE strategies in Chicago, where concerns have been raised about the use of excessive force, including tear gas and pepper spray against civilians.
Recently, Pritzker urged Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino to halt operations, as mentioned in a letter he sent to Noem. “Your operation has sown fear, division, and confusion among the law-abiding residents of our community,” he expressed at a news conference, highlighting the need to protect children during the holiday season.
“No child in America should go trick-or-treating in fear of facing armed federal agents and potentially facing tear gas,” he emphasized, expressing disbelief that such a plea was necessary. “This is not the America I know. I need some sanity for our children.”
A federal judge recently ordered Bovino to report in court on weekdays until November 5 regarding ICE operations amid growing scrutiny.
In response to Pritzker’s comments, the DHS released a statement accusing him of attempting to undermine the integrity of law enforcement officers who are working to combat crime. “He is promoting a false narrative that DHS is targeting schools, hospitals, and churches,” stated DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin. “Our officers only resort to crowd control measures when necessary and after repeated warnings.”
She concluded by assuring that those who are legally present and haven’t broken any other laws need not worry.
