Hundreds of cremated human remains found and retrieved from the Nevada desert

Federal authorities are investigating after over 300 cremated human remains were found in the desert near Las Vegas.

This unsettling discovery was made in July by a local individual outside Searchlight, Nevada, which is about an hour south of Las Vegas. Reports confirmed that these remains were human by August, according to officials from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

The remains, primarily crushed bone fragments, were located scattered across a remote area on the outskirts of the city.

On Wednesday, workers from Palm Mortuary and Cemetery were involved in the removal of around 315 sets of remains from the site.

Celena DiLullo, the president of Palm Mortuaries and Cemeteries, shared that the remains would be transferred to a cemetery crypt, expressing the importance of honoring those who passed. “I think it’s crucial that these individuals aren’t forgotten or left behind,” DiLullo said, highlighting the significance for both the community and their profession.

The investigation by the BLM and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is ongoing, though the origin of the remains is still unclear. There were initial suggestions that the remains might have been improperly discarded by a commercial funeral home.

According to Nevada law, scattering ashes on public land is allowed, and generally, there’s no prohibition against scattering cremated remains.

Nevertheless, BLM regulations specifically ban the commercial distribution of cremated remains on federal land, where these remains were found.

Currently, authorities have not identified any suspects or confirmed connections to any specific mortuary.

Responses from Palm Mortuaries and Cemetery, the BLM, and the LVMPD are still pending.
