Halloween Costume Mocking Attorney General Candidate

This past Friday, Jay Jones, the Virginia Democratic attorney general candidate, found himself the subject of a Halloween-themed jab from Republicans. They unveiled a costume that parodied the controversies surrounding his campaign and took it around Richmond.

Jones has faced a string of scandals, including a judicial investigation and the surfacing of alarming text messages just weeks ago.

Adam Piper, from the Republican Attorneys Association, commented that dressing up as Jones is “more scary than Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger.” He described the situation as a “scary movie” starring a politician tangled in scandals, complete with ghostly ethics, disturbing text messages, and criminal investigations. The costumes were also featured on a mobile advertising truck that traveled through the crowded areas of Richmond.

Notably, there was a tombstone next to Jones’ likeness that said, “Rest in peace, here lies my political enemy,” which certainly added to the mocking tone.

Calls for Jones to Step Down

On October 3, reports surfaced revealing that Jones had a disturbing conversation with a Republican representative where he spoke about wanting to inflict harm on then-House Speaker Todd Gilbert. Jones argued that Gilbert had crossed party lines in honoring the late Representative Joe Johnson, suggesting that Johnson frequently shared Democratic insights with Republicans.

In a surreal twist, Piper emphasized that homemade costumes like this have a knack for scaring voters. He quipped that “not even ‘Mr. Monopoly’ could restore the public trust he had lost,” showcasing some costume ideas that added an extra layer of dark humor.

Among those ideas was one featuring Jones dressed as Uncle Pennybags, clutching Monopoly money and “Get Out of Jail Free” cards, referencing his previous reckless driving incidents, which remain under investigation.

The Republican Attorneys General Association showcased another costume where Jones was depicted as a race car driver, a nod to his past alleged speeding that caught the attention of law enforcement during pandemic restrictions.

They even constructed a humorous portrayal of Jones as a giant iPhone, showing a part of his explicit text exchange with a Republican delegate that hinted at violence among prominent politicians.

Jones had written about attending the funerals of various Republicans and making regrettable comments about violence against them, which only fueled the controversy surrounding him.
