Weekly Reflection on Masculinity
This week’s discussion revolves around a viral video featuring star athlete Erling Haaland. The clip shows his girlfriend, Isabel Haugsen, revealing that she initially had feelings for his best friend before they began dating.
For those unfamiliar with Haaland, he’s a prominent Norwegian soccer player known for his incredible talent and success in the sport. His fame really does reach global proportions.
Watching his reaction was intense. He looked genuinely confused, and, honestly, I felt shocked too. It’s surprising to see someone, even a world-class athlete, visibly affected by such honesty. There was an undercurrent of anger, too, I think. It makes one wonder how anyone could cope with that kind of revelation.
Haugsen mentions at one point that she doesn’t find it enjoyable to talk about it, which really raised eyebrows. Well, of course, who would? No one relishes the feeling of being a backup plan—especially not someone like Haaland, who seems to have it all. Her attraction seems to waver, almost like she’s admitting she was initially drawn to him due to his wealth and fame.
There are definitely lessons to be gleaned from this situation. It’s clear that rejection can sting, no matter a person’s status. The harsh truth is that both men and women might carry these feelings deep down. It also raises a red flag about relationships; men should think twice before marrying someone who openly admits such things.
As other commentators pointed out, perhaps Haaland should consider moving on. It’s hard to argue against that perspective.
