Charges Filed in Disappearance of 5-Year-Old Idaho Boy
In a significant development four years after the disappearance of a 5-year-old boy from Fruitland, Idaho, prosecutors have announced murder charges against individuals associated with the case. Michael Vaughn was reported missing in July 2021, and the announcement comes from Payette County Prosecutor Michael Duke, who stated, “My office is pursuing charges against those involved in the disappearance and murder of 5-year-old Michael Vaughn during the summer of 2021.”
Details remain sparse, as Duke didn’t specify the suspects involved. The woman who answered the phone at his office could only refer back to Duke’s statements. Interestingly, the Idaho woman linked to Michael’s case had been active on TikTok, posting a video while in front of a flyer related to the ongoing search for the boy.
Stacey Wondra, a 33-year-old man already considered a suspect, has an arrest warrant out for him. Reports indicate he will face charges of first-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping, and tampering with evidence. His wife, Sarah Wondra, is also part of this investigation but her earlier charge of failing to report a death was dropped.
Both Wondras had been arrested on misdemeanor charges in 2022, but Stacey ended up in federal prison for different reasons after being convicted for possessing a firearm as a felon. Sarah is now serving time in an Idaho prison related to an unrelated assault case. There was some media attention around Sarah due to her social media activity, particularly a post standing in front of a flyer about Michael.
Interestingly, Duke mentioned that they had initially hoped to find Michael’s body before moving forward with charges but felt it was important to act now to prevent further distress to the family. Given the ongoing nature of this investigation, he noted that the Fruitland Police and his office have maintained a relentless pursuit of the case.
Michael’s mother, Brandi Vaughn, expressed her gratitude toward law enforcement in a Facebook post, commending their dedication. This case has drawn considerable local interest, especially since the families of both the Wondras and Vaughns live close to each other, raising many questions about the neighborhood and individuals involved.
As of now, anyone with information related to Michael’s case is encouraged to reach out to the Fruitland Police Department.
