U.S. Treasury Imposes Sanctions on Drug and Migrant Smuggling Group Tied to Cartels in Cancun

The U.S. Treasury Department has targeted a human smuggling operation based in Cancun, which facilitated the movement of migrants to various regions including the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and South America. This group reportedly utilized yachts to transport thousands of migrants to Mexico, subsequently collaborating with others to transport them into California.

Recently, U.S. Treasury officials announced sanctions against Vikrant Bhardwaj, a dual citizen of Mexico and India, along with an organization that carries his name. It’s alleged that Bhardwaj coordinated with different criminal groups to bring thousands of immigrants into the United States via Mexico while also being involved in drug trafficking and money laundering activities. While specific cartels weren’t named by the Treasury, sources indicated that Bhardwaj had major ties with the Sinaloa cartel. Authorities claim he owned multiple marinas in Mexico and held CEO positions in various companies across Mexico, India, and the UAE, which were purportedly used for laundering illicit earnings.

Additionally, sanctions were placed on Jose German Valadez Flores, a Mexican businessman thought to be a drug trafficker. He is believed to have collaborated closely with Bhardwaj and was implicated in bribing corrupt officials to facilitate the smuggling of migrants into Cancun.

Jorge Alejandro Mendoza Villegas, a former police officer in Quintana Roo, was also sanctioned. Allegations suggest that Mendoza provided the Bhardwaj organization with access to Cancun’s airport, aiding in the smuggling of both migrants and drugs.

Bhardwaj’s wife, Indu Rani, who holds dual citizenship in Mexico and India, has also been sanctioned. Reports indicate her involvement in money laundering operations and her ownership stake in Bhardwaj’s various enterprises.

The Treasury has also imposed sanctions on eight companies across Mexico, India, and the UAE that are linked to Bhardwaj. These entities cover a range of industries, including marinas, yacht operations, construction, real estate, textiles, and energy trading.

As a result of these sanctions, any assets or accounts held by the sanctioned individuals in the U.S. are blocked, and U.S. citizens and businesses are barred from interacting with them.
