Ja Morant’s Frustration Following Grizzlies’ Disappointing Start

The Memphis Grizzlies have had a rocky beginning to the 2025-26 season, which hasn’t sat well with Ja Morant. After the team lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in their NBA Cup opener, Morant openly expressed dissatisfaction with the coaching staff. In the aftermath of a 117-112 defeat, he was found repeating a similar line to reporters: “Ask the coaching staff” when it came to assessing his performance.

This tension escalated when it was reported that Morant had been suspended for one game due to “conduct detrimental to the team.” This news emerged almost immediately after he publicly critiqued the team’s strategies and decisions.

On Friday, when a reporter asked if he could’ve done anything differently during the game, a visibly annoyed Morant remarked, “According to them, honestly, probably don’t play me. That was basically the message. That’s cool.”

The Grizzlies have yet to respond to inquiries following Morant’s comments. In the game against the Lakers, he managed only eight points, the lowest among the starters, while teammate Jalen Wells led with 16.

This recent loss put the Grizzlies at a 3-3 record for the season. It’s worth noting that Morant’s lackluster performance was not just about scoring; fans noted he seemed to lack the usual energy, which has been a hallmark of his play since he emerged as a star in the league.

In the wake of a disappointing playoff exit — a 4-0 sweep by the Oklahoma City Thunder, who went on to win the championship — the team’s front office had opted for a coaching change. Tuomas Isalo is now at the helm.

Looking ahead, the Grizzlies are scheduled to face the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, and it will be interesting to see if Morant’s situation improves or if the tension continues to escalate.
