Carolina Hurricanes’ Goaltending Dilemma Ahead of Game 5

The Carolina Hurricanes’ goaltending situation has become the hot topic leading into Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals, and there’s still no word from the team about who will start in net.

Before Game 4 against the Las Vegas Golden Knights, the big question was whether Frederik Andersen, who had been the starting goaltender throughout the playoffs, would continue or if Brandon Bussi, who performed admirably as a backup in Game 3, would make his postseason debut.

Ultimately, Bussi received the nod, with Andersen not on the roster and Pyotr Kochetkov backing him up. The game proved to be high-scoring, but the Hurricanes came away with the win.

Now that the series is tied 2-2, you might expect that Bussi would get the chance to play again. Strangely enough, head coach Rod Brind’Amour has yet to officially declare a starter. Instead, he mentioned that Andersen had skated with a key group, stating, “everyone is available.”

Interestingly, during the main skate, Bussi was again in net, which is where he usually practices. While it makes some sense for the Hurricanes to be cautious, it really seems like Bussi should be the one starting in Game 5.

Playing at home could benefit Bussi, who got his first playoff experience in Vegas but still managed to make 18 saves out of 21 shots. So far, no goaltender has truly stolen a game in this series, as both teams have focused on offense. But perhaps Game 5 will bring a change in that dynamic.
