Hurricanes defeat Golden Knights in Game 5 to take 3-2 lead in Stanley Cup Final

Stanley Cup Final Update: Hurricanes vs. Golden Knights

The Stanley Cup Final between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Vegas Golden Knights has certainly been one for the books, filled with unexpected twists and turns.

After four exciting games—two of which were particularly wild in Las Vegas—the series moved back to Raleigh for Game 5, with both teams locked in a 2-2 tie.

The game started off slower than some of the previous matchups, which were characterized by rapid scoring. However, one thing that stood out was the number of penalties teams imposed on themselves.

In the first period, the Hurricanes got their first penalty call when Nikolaj Ehlers accidentally shot the puck into the stands. But soon after, Las Vegas capitalized on a power play. Pavel Dorofeev, a forward for the Golden Knights, scored their first goal from a brilliant assist by Jack Eichel.

Not long after, Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal scored, deftly redirecting a pass from Ehlers. This tied the game and was notable because it extended Staal’s point streak to five games, tying the record for consecutive goals in Stanley Cup Final history. It’s interesting, though; he had only scored twice in the playoffs leading up to this final.

As the second period commenced, things got even more chaotic. The Hurricanes faced yet another penalty, this time a delay-of-game violation, but it was the Golden Knights’ back-to-back penalties that set up another scoring opportunity for Carolina. Just seconds after Jeremy Lauzon was fouled, Brayden McNabb took an ill-timed cross-checking penalty, putting the Hurricanes on the power play again. Andrei Svechnikov took full advantage, putting his team ahead 2-1.

Svechnikov and the rest of the Hurricanes were pushing hard to keep the momentum going. Shortly after, Sebastian Aho also found the net, which only added to the Golden Knights’ struggles. Things escalated when William Karlsson, one of Vegas’s key players, had to leave the game due to an injury and didn’t return.

It seemed like bad luck continued for the Golden Knights. Captain Mark Stone got a penalty for a high stick on Jalen Chatfield, which resulted in a double minor because he was so close to causing an injury. The Hurricanes took advantage, with Svechnikov scoring again to stretch the lead to 4-1.

Of course, in a series as unpredictable as this one, a two-goal lead is never safe. Dorofeev struck again for Vegas, narrowing the score to 4-2 and igniting a flurry of attacking plays as Vegas pressed hard for more goals.

Towards the end of the game, Carolina encountered another delay-of-game penalty, leading Vegas to pull their goalie and go for a 6-on-4 advantage. With less than a minute left in regulation, they had several scoring chances, putting pressure on Carolina’s defense.

Yet, the Hurricanes managed to weather the storm, and a late empty-net goal sealed the score at 4-2. With this win, Carolina now leads the series 3-2 and heads back to T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for Game 6. This could very well be their chance to clinch the Stanley Cup for the second time in franchise history.
