Pentagon gives green light for Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, leaving final choice to Trump

Pentagon Approves Tomahawk Missile Transfer to Ukraine

The Pentagon has reportedly greenlit the transfer of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, with the final say resting in the hands of President Donald Trump. There have been concerns about the potential depletion of the U.S. stockpile, but the Department of the Army has indicated that sending these long-range missiles would not have a detrimental impact on existing reserves.

Earlier this month, during a visit from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, President Trump expressed hesitance to send missiles, stating, “I don’t want to give up what we need to protect our country.” The introduction of Tomahawk missiles would significantly alter the landscape of the conflict, allowing Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory, particularly targeting vital energy installations and disrupting Moscow’s military operations.

European officials have noted their surprise at Trump’s restraint, considering that U.S. military leaders had previously informed the administration that there was little reason to withhold the requested weaponry. Although allies have suggested that further U.S. involvement might be unnecessary, Russian President Vladimir Putin has countered by warning that such a move could represent a serious escalation, with potential repercussions that would be “overwhelming.”

“Dialogue is always better than confrontation and conflict, especially war,” Putin said. He added that if the U.S. were to deploy Tomahawk missiles against Russia, there would be significant, if not overwhelming, consequences.

In response, U.S. defense officials are exploring how to quickly train Ukrainian forces in effectively using and launching these missiles. Given the weakened state of Ukraine’s navy, there are additional considerations on how to safely launch these systems, typically deployed from naval vessels.

Meanwhile, President Zelenskiy has suggested that failing to provide Tomahawk missiles could push Putin further from diplomatic solutions. He indicated that as long as the question of Ukraine’s long-range capabilities remained unresolved, Russia’s willingness to engage in diplomacy would diminish.

“The front line could stimulate diplomacy. Instead, Russia continues to do everything possible to get out of diplomacy,” Zelenskiy remarked, stressing that Ukraine’s offensive capabilities could be crucial for peace.
