City imposes curfew for minors following weeks of violence and unrest

Curfew Imposed for Minors in Washington, D.C.

Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, D.C. has announced a citywide curfew for individuals under 18, set to begin Saturday night. This decision follows weeks marked by violence and unrest in the area.

This comes shortly after President Trump had deployed thousands of National Guard troops to the capital, described by him as addressing a crime “crisis.”

Effective through November 5, Bowser’s order permits police to designate specific “special areas” or high-risk zones where the curfew will start at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, four of these zones will be implemented. They include the Banner Car Recreation Center, Union Station, the Navy Yard, and the U Street Corridor. The curfew itself is set from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Youths who break this curfew may face fines up to $300 or even detention for as long as 10 days, according to authorities.

Furthermore, police have the latitude to establish temporary curfew zones in areas where a gathering of eight or more minors could signal heightened risks to public safety.

The announcement of this curfew follows a violent incident on Halloween night, which involved many teens at the Navy Yard, resulting in the arrest of at least ten individuals, including one 18-year-old and four minors. Charges included public marijuana use, assault, and failure to comply with law enforcement. An officer sustained injuries during the incident and required treatment at the scene.

There were several social media posts capturing images and videos of large riots occurring in the District that evening.

In one clip shared online, a National Guard soldier in brown uniform could be seen running through a throng of youngsters in a park as police presence intensified. Video footage also depicted police vehicles maneuvering around M Street SE, which was partially obstructed due to the heightened law enforcement activity.

The rally that began peacefully on Friday evening eventually escalated out of control as “hundreds of juveniles” flooded into the park, according to law enforcement representatives. Some participants ignored police directives and engaged in fights, disrupting traffic flows. A D.C. police sergeant reportedly suffered minor injuries while trying to maintain order during the chaos.
