Obama Hits the Campaign Trail for Democratic Candidates

Former President Barack Obama energized supporters for Democratic gubernatorial candidates Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill at events in Virginia and New Jersey on Saturday. He didn’t hold back in criticizing President Trump during his speeches.

At both rallies, Obama remarked, “Every day this White House offers something new: lawlessness and recklessness and meanness and just plain insanity.”

His first appearance was with Spanberger in Norfolk, Virginia, followed by another rally in Newark, New Jersey, where he supported Sherrill, who serves the 11th Congressional District. Obama contrasted the president’s actions with the accomplishments of both candidates, emphasizing that voters deserve leaders who confront tough issues and unite rather than divide.

Obama has frequently criticized Trump, accusing him of politicizing the Department of Justice and criticizing a costly ballroom project at the White House. He also mentioned a peculiar AI-generated video Trump shared recently, which featured a crowned Trump dropping waste from a fighter jet onto protesters in New York City.

“All of this is aimed at distracting from the fact that your situation is not getting better,” Obama told attendees in Norfolk.

When the crowds booed Trump, Obama reminded them of his 2016 motto: “Don’t boo, vote.” He elaborated on this in Newark, downplaying the AI video by saying it “isn’t even worth booing.”

“To be honest with you, our country and our politics are in a pretty bleak place right now,” he expressed in Newark.

During both rallies, Obama praised Spanberger and Sherrill as the kind of leaders America needs, stating they are genuinely motivated to serve. He also noted Virginia Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earl Sears and former state Rep. Jack Ciattarelli at the respective events.

Current polls show Spanberger and Sherrill ahead of their opponents, but uncertainties linger as Election Day approaches. Spanberger has a notable lead over Earl Sears, yet Democrats are wary of implications from a scandal involving violent texts linked to Democratic Attorney General candidate Jay Jones.

In New Jersey, political tensions with Ciattarelli appear stronger than anticipated. Heavyweights like Obama are stepping in to galvanize support for Sherrill, with Senator Ruben Gallego from Arizona set to speak on her behalf on Sunday.

At both rallies, Obama encouraged the audience to vote early if they hadn’t already done so, urging them to rally their friends and family. “Just go, ‘Come on.’ Get him off the couch,” he urged in Newark.
