Louvre robbery suspects shared previous theft records

Louvre Heist Update

On Sunday, Paris prosecutors revealed that two suspects in the Louvre jewelry heist have prior convictions for theft dating back a decade. Currently, three of the four individuals involved are in custody.

Laure Becuaux stated that DNA from the 37-year-old man, who was charged on Saturday, was found in the basket lift utilized to access the museum’s windows.

This individual faces preliminary charges of organized gang theft and criminal conspiracy.

Becuaux noted that the man has a criminal history, including 11 convictions, 10 of which are for theft.

Another suspect, a 39-year-old man facing similar preliminary charges, has a total of 15 convictions, with two related to theft.

Interestingly, both suspects had previously been involved in the same theft case and were convicted in Paris in 2015, according to Becuaux.

A 34-year-old man, believed to be part of the so-called “Commando” team referenced by French media, was also charged this week.

Additionally, a 38-year-old woman, who is in a long-term relationship with the 37-year-old suspect, faces preliminary charges of conspiracy. Becuaux mentioned the closeness among the suspects.

All four suspects are currently in custody.

Becuaux declined to comment on whether the authorities are making progress in recovering the stolen jewels.

“We’re exploring all routes regarding potential resale in parallel markets, but we hope it’s not imminent. The items might be linked to money laundering or trade, and we’re investigating every lead,” she remarked.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez expressed optimism about the investigation in an interview with Le Parisien. He noted that while there are four suspects, at least one might still be at large, which could include individuals who orchestrated the crime.

“I have confidence in the police’s efforts, but I’m not naive enough to think we’ll recover the stolen items soon,” Nuñez added.
