Democrats only needed to appear reasonable and capable. That was too much to expect.

Democrats only needed to appear reasonable and capable. That was too much to expect.

What voters seek is really just competence and a sense of normalcy. Seems simple, right?

Yet, both Republicans and Democrats have sidestepped this issue, instead diving headfirst into a circus that feels more like a parade of Muppets than a serious discussion. Interestingly, the Democratic Party’s narrative around the Biden era hasn’t gained much traction; perhaps that’s why it comes across as more appealing at times.

Back in 2020, Democrats noticed a yearning among voters for stability and effectiveness, and they capitalized on it. But instead of addressing that need, they’ve become increasingly fixated on identity politics, heading in a direction that feels almost contradictory.

This was highlighted recently by Karine Jean-Pierre, a former spokesperson for the Biden administration, who is now on a book tour. Her appearances haven’t gone particularly well—largely because, well, she often struggles to express her thoughts clearly.

Don’t just take my word for it. The New York Times noted that “a White House press secretary should be adept at communicating with the media,” a skill that seemed lacking during her tour this week.

During her interview with The New Yorker, which was called an “absolute train wreck” by New York Magazine, she appeared bewildered and incoherent, leaving critics shaking their heads.

While her memoir could have been aptly titled “Embarrassing and Incoherent,” it instead bears the name “The Independent: A look inside the broken White House across party lines.”

If you think the title is an odd choice, the subheading is even stranger—it refers to President Trump’s administration, a chapter with which Jean-Pierre has little apparent connection.

Jean-Pierre’s appointment as the White House spokesperson must serve as a source of embarrassment for many. But let’s not get too distracted. Her promotion wasn’t just one misstep; it reflects a broader trend of ineptitude in Biden’s White House.

That’s not just troubling; it’s worse when you remember that Biden’s campaign was built around the idea of restoring responsibility to “grown-ups.” This pledge resonated strongly with voters, who were eager for a more mature leadership.

However, instead of reliable, competent professionals, the administration seems to have assembled a collection of utterly unqualified individuals. Many appear to have been chosen based on image alone, which is eyebrow-raising.

One of the Democratic Party’s crucial missteps has been its embrace of identity politics. Even if they know what voters want, they seem to be trapped in a worldview shaped by an increasingly radical base, prioritizing physical traits and sexual orientation over actual qualifications and experience.

For instance, a chatbot was even nominated for vice president—yes, the first black woman in that role. And a former mayor, who identifies as gay, was put in charge of managing vast transportation infrastructure. Then there’s an attorney without any medical experience heading Health and Human Services. And let’s not forget the publicist who, despite her communication struggles, seems eager to champion diversity.

This all feels like it has betrayed voters who wanted a return to stability after the turbulence of Trump’s first term.

Biden secured the 2020 Democratic primary largely by promising something different. He made it clear he wouldn’t support illegal immigration policies that would drain taxpayer resources for things like gender reassignment surgeries. The expectations for normalcy and competence were so low that Biden, a habitual centrist, managed to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming president.

What followed was a missed opportunity; the Democrats struggled to capitalize on the openings created by Trump. Their fixation on identity politics, along with performative gestures and virtue signaling, has left them at a standstill.

So, if you’re looking for a competent, normal representative, well, at this party, it seems all they’ve got is Jean-Pierre and a man in a dress.
