Michelle Obama Reflects on Public Pressure and Fashion Choices
Former First Lady Michelle Obama spoke candidly about the intense public scrutiny she faced as a black woman during her time in the White House, particularly regarding her fashion choices.
At 61, Obama expresses a newfound confidence, describing herself as being in her “golden years.” She emphasized this while promoting her upcoming book, The Look, discussing how she aims to convey messages through her clothing.
In her book, she noted, “As the first black couple, we were keenly aware that we couldn’t afford to make any mistakes.” She added, “As a black woman, I felt particularly watched, especially by white spectators.”
Often seen as a fashion icon and cover model for Vogue, she remarked, “We didn’t enjoy the same benefits that other families might have had.”
Reflecting on the political landscape, she said, “In a political environment where mistakes can be weaponized against you, particularly when you belong to a marginalized race, everything you do is under a spotlight.” This point was brought up during an interview with Robin Roberts.
Interestingly, during their presidency, President Obama often shied away from discussing fashion, believing it distracted from more substantive topics, insisting people should know him for his work rather than his appearance.
Now, however, Michelle believes it’s time to embrace what she calls “soft power” through her wardrobe choices. “Style and fashion are significant ways we communicate,” she commented. “What you wear says a lot about your values, your background, your culture. I was very intentional about my messages.”
She shared concerns about making a good impression, noting, “If I didn’t present well, I worried that the mothers and grandmothers would disapprove.”
Obama also acknowledged societal pressures on women, stating, “We live in a culture where, when pursuing a woman, the first critique is often about her looks or size. It’s frustrating and can make one feel belittled.” She further expressed that some designers seemed to treat her as if they owned the role of First Lady.
Co-authoring the book with her stylist, it features images of President Obama throughout her time in the spotlight, alongside reflections on her fashion choices.
Recently, President Obama made headlines by missing significant events, including Jimmy Carter’s funeral and President Trump’s inauguration, which left her husband to attend solo. She later mentioned her indecisiveness about what to wear as a reason for her absence.
This absence ignited rumors about their marriage, but both Michelle and Barack dismissed those speculations over the summer.
Amid all the drama, the former First Lady insists she is enjoying life. “I feel like I’m in the best stage of my life right now, especially with my daughters growing up and getting jobs,” she reflected. “Barack seems at peace too, feeling free enough to share his wisdom.”
