Seton Hall Looks to Rebuild After Difficult Season
There’s only one way for Seton Hall to go and that’s up. After a rough season that saw them win just seven games, the lowest tally since 1981-82, there’s bound to be some improvement.
The big question, though, is how much they can bounce back. Currently, external expectations aren’t high. Coaches in the conference have picked Seton Hall to finish last in the Big East, and no players made it onto the All-League teams.
Coach Shaheen Holloway has been busy revamping the team, adding ten transfers to the mix. There’s real potential in newcomers like Adam “Bud” Clark from Merrimack, who was a first-team All-MAAC player last season, averaging nearly 20 points and six assists.
“What Bud brings to the team is he’s a winner,” Holloway said during Seton Hall’s media day. Clark, standing at 5-foot-10, is described as tough, fearless, and someone with a chip on his shoulder. Holloway also pointed out that while Clark scored a lot, he’s also a solid playmaker, which might surprise people.
Other newcomers include high-scoring wing Elijah Fisher and guards Trey Parker, Mike Williams, and AJ Staton McCray. Additionally, freshman forward Najai Hines showed potential and could form a solid partnership in the paint with returning sophomore Godswill Elheline.
Last year, Holloway shone as the coach of St. Peter’s, leading them to the Elite Eight. In his second season at Seton Hall, they faced a setback when they were disqualified from the NCAA Tournament, although they managed to win the NIT. Unfortunately, the program was hit hard by the transfers of standout players Cadary Richmond and Dre Davis. With 25 losses last season, the Pirates are hoping to defy expectations this winter, especially since the bottom half of the Big East seems vulnerable.
“This team is going to be fun to watch. We’re different, faster, more athletic, and we have more depth,” Holloway said. “Now it’s time for me to step up and bring it all together.”
He also mentioned his honest approach, stating, “If I don’t believe we can make it, I’ll tell you.” As long as the team remains healthy and committed, he feels they have a solid chance to perform exceptionally.
