Trump Administration Plans to Fund SNAP Amid Shutdown

The Trump administration is looking to cover part of the costs for the food assistance program, SNAP, as the government shutdown continues to escalate.

Key government programs, like SNAP, officially came to a halt last weekend after numerous votes from Democrats aimed at reopening the government failed throughout October. As the shutdown stretches on, the Trump administration has decided to partially fund SNAP benefits.

On Friday, the administration disclosed that it would require $5.25 billion in emergency funds before officially terminating SNAP. This amount would only address about half of the $9 billion each month spent on SNAP benefits.

Federal judges have indicated that the USDA could reallocate funds to support SNAP in November. However, the Trump administration seems hesitant to do so, suggesting such a move would pose an “unacceptable risk.”

Patrick Penn, who oversees the SNAP program at the Department of Agriculture, noted, “The Section 32 Child Nutrition Program Fund is not a backup for SNAP.” He expressed concern about using funds from the Child Nutrition Administration, stating it would create an unmanageable gap that Congress might not resolve easily.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins is also taking this opportunity to ensure that taxpayer-funded benefits are only given to American citizens, specifically targeting illegal recipients.

Rollins remarked, “On the first day at USDA, we directed states to provide SNAP data to confirm that illegal immigrants are not receiving benefits meant for American families.” She added that out of the states that cooperated, significant instances of fraud were already uncovered.

Furthermore, she criticized Democrats for allegedly prioritizing illegal immigrants over American workers, insisting that the current administration would not stand for waste, fraud, and abuse, especially while hardworking Americans struggle.
