Rangers Seeking Home Victory Amid Unfortunate Start

The statistics tell an interesting story. The Rangers are one of just two teams, alongside the Kings, yet to secure a victory on home ice this season. They’ve dropped games at the Garden with a disappointing 15-6 loss tally and went over 180 minutes without scoring as they kicked off the season.

However, JT Miller believes it’s important to note that the data is still limited.

So far, the Blueshirts have played just 5 out of their 41 home games, ending with a record of 0-4-1.

Looking ahead, Game 6 is set for Tuesday night against the Hurricanes. The team aims for their fourth consecutive win, building on a solid performance during their recent West Coast trip where they finally managed a consistent mix of strong gameplay and garnered points. After consecutive home losses before their trip to Calgary, head coach Mike Sullivan mentioned that the team “started to lose their arrogance,” but felt they had regained it after their third win in a row.

Looking to the future, the Blueshirts are keen on amplifying their production at home. They are already strategizing for a winning streak, with their offense beginning to find its rhythm. When asked about the relief of finally clinching that first home win, Mika Zibanejad joked:

“We want to win at home,” he said after practice on Monday. “We want it to be a tough place for opponents to play.”

Remarkably, through the 2023-24 season, the Rangers boasted the second-best home record in the league, establishing a brief era of dominance with a 30-11-0 record at home that season, contributing to a Presidents Trophy-winning campaign.

However, this year tells a different tale. The Rangers have struggled significantly at home, apart from squeezing out one point against the Sharks. They didn’t even manage to score their first home goal until their fourth game, despite amassing 55 quality chances while allowing only 36 against their opponents.

Still, Sullivan clarified they aren’t trying to adopt differing play styles for home and away games. Miller echoed this sentiment, stating that they just need to see better results at the Garden.

“Is there a human element when comparing home games to away ones? Maybe just a bit,” Sullivan remarked. “Understanding what success looks like for this group is vital. The recent road trip showed that if we play our game the right way, we can achieve success.”

Miller and Zibanejad agree that a quick start is critical. Miller reflected on the “shock” of their 5-1 loss to the Flames last week and emphasized focusing on better beginnings after Calgary. The Blueshirts found themselves scoring first in their next three games, which led to six possible points. Unfortunately, they only managed to score first in one of their home games.

An early lead against the Hurricanes, who have consistently performed at a high level over the last four seasons, could help shake off the lingering memories of their home drought. That would energize the crowd and prevent any lost momentum, allowing them to sidestep further pressure.

With persistence and faith in their style—despite the persistent home losses—they remain hopeful that things will turn around and bring them some much-needed affirmation.

“If we revisit this at the end of the season and our home record is poor, then maybe we’ll think about it,” Miller suggested. “But honestly, it’s too early for that. Some performances have been commendable, especially regarding our defense and making it tough for rivals to attack.”

“Still, the sample size so far is too small to draw any substantial conclusions.”
