Montana Democratic candidate sends threatening voicemail to Republican senator

Freshman Senator Tim Sheehy, a Republican from Montana, has recently been the subject of serious threats and hostile messages from a left-wing candidate for city commissioner in Helena, Montana. This situation escalated a few weeks ago when she left a voicemail expressing her extreme displeasure regarding Sheehy’s vote in favor of a significant tax and spending bill.

The voicemail, which surfaced in July just after the bill’s passage, displays the anger of many Democrats in response to the legislation. In the recorded message, Haley McKnight, the candidate, introduces herself as a voter from Helena and immediately launches into a tirade. She accuses Sheehy of being a “coward” and a “thief,” claiming he has harmed millions of Americans by undermining their healthcare. She adds a shocking remark wishing him an aggressive illness.

However, that wasn’t the end of her attacks. Within the roughly one-minute message, McKnight makes disparaging comments about Sheehy’s personal life and children, suggesting he shouldn’t cross paths with her on the street.

Later on, in her voice message, McKnight continues her vitriol, expressing her hopes for Sheehy’s future misfortunes, stating he’s only serving himself and not the citizens of Montana. McKnight runs a local business and has a background of political activism, including ties to Democratic campaigns.

In light of her comments and the volatile political climate, McKnight admitted to local media that she was responding with “righteous anger” and clarified that she never intended to threaten Sheehy. Despite this, the message has attracted significant attention, with critics highlighting the growing concern over political violence and rhetoric. Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL, has yet to publicly engage in dialogue with McKnight about her comments.

Amid these threats, McKnight has reported receiving backlash, including additional threats toward herself and her business, due to the media attention surrounding her voicemail. She asserts that her comments stemmed from a genuine concern for her community and insists that politics should not shy away from difficult conversations. As the situation unfolds, both sides seem to agree on the need for some reflection on the current state of political discourse.

No statewide elections are scheduled in Montana this year, keeping the focus on this heated local race.
