Concerns Over Vehicle Registrations for Non-English-Speaking Drivers in Texas

As road safety issues escalate with more non-English-speaking foreign drivers operating 18-wheelers, a Texas lawmaker has highlighted a troubling situation at the Department of Transportation. It seems illegal immigrants might be registering vehicles without appropriate status.

On Monday, Texas Representative Brian Harrison called upon the Texas Department of Transportation to look into these allegations after his office received reports confirming that undocumented individuals had, indeed, been able to register vehicles.

In his letter, Harrison expressed his concern, stating, “My office recently received alarming reports that illegal immigrants are able to register their vehicles in Texas. To my surprise, after investigation, my office confirmed that these reports are, in fact, genuine.”

The letter mentions Texas Transportation Law Section 502.040(b), which requires applications to include personally identifying information as stipulated by departmental regulations. It alleges that the agency’s broad powers may have been misappropriated.

Harrison continued in his letter, asking what steps the DMV has taken to ensure that vehicle owners are either citizens or legally residing in the country prior to issuing registrations. He has hinted at the possibility of drafting legislation to mandate verification of legal status unless immediate corrective actions are taken by the DMV.

Interestingly, Texas has recently phased out temporary paper license plates, a move perceived as a strategy to combat the fraud concerns raised by Harrison.

Additionally, he underscored the pivotal role politicians in Texas should play in bolstering the administration, noting, “It’s past time for the Texas government to start acting like we’re in a fight for the future of Western civilization.” No immediate response was received from the Texas Department of Transportation following inquiries.
