Homeschooling Landscape Shifting
Did you know that around 6% of students in the United States are homeschooled? That translates to roughly 4 million kids, although this number varies depending on different sources. According to the National Institute of Home Education, there has been a consistent increase over the past five years. But what’s driving this trend?
One reason might be that homeschooling lets parents tailor their teaching methods to fit their child’s needs. Generally, homeschooled students tend to perform better academically than their peers in traditional schools. Aside from that, homeschooling can strengthen family bonds and promote a safer learning environment. Plus, it allows parents to incorporate their values, beliefs, and customs into the education process. However, on November 4, 2025, everything changed for the homeschooling community.
A new children and welfare bill was introduced by the government, requiring that all children who aren’t enrolled in conventional educational settings—whether public, private, or charter—must register and acquire a digital ID. This effectively places all children under state oversight, which raises concerns about safety and privacy. Although it might seem innocuous at first glance, there are fears that this legislation could impose major restrictions, particularly regarding religious freedoms. Emily Bourne, a reporter from Christian Concern, explains the potential implications for religious liberty and parental rights:
“Local authorities might gain the ability to monitor a family’s church attendance, educational choices, and religious teachings,” Bourne pointed out. He further expressed concern that the bill could allow states to label certain Christian teachings as ‘inappropriate or dangerous.’ Furthermore, there are instances where parents face pressure to go against their religious beliefs regarding their children’s gender identities, essentially under the threat of losing custody,” he stated.
This bill aims to collect personal information, including a child’s name, medical history, and religion. Critics argue that it violates human rights laws, which prioritize a parent’s right to educate their child. While the intentions behind the bill might be well-meaning, it shifts the responsibility for a child’s upbringing from parents to the state, a move Bourne describes as a means of “next generation control.”
Whether you homeschool or send your kids to traditional schools, it’s essential for Christian families to stand for truth and safeguard fundamental freedoms. As stated in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” But without educational freedom, how can parents ensure their children receive the best education possible?
