Virginia Attorney General Encourages Split Ballot Voting

In an interesting turn of events, Republican Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares has shown a distinct lack of support for his fellow Republican gubernatorial candidate, Winsome Earl Sears. Instead, he’s seemingly urging voters to consider casting their ballots for both himself and Democrats.

Miyares is currently running for reelection against Democrat Jay Jones, a former Virginia state representative. Recently, he shared a video on X featuring voters who mentioned voting for both him and Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger, stating, “Dave is splitting tickets. So can you.”

Miyares noted, “I’m here in beautiful Stafford. I’ve had the chance to meet with voters. Dave, who’s also here, wishes to share his thoughts on voting.” A voter named Dave responded, “That’s right. Yeah, no, I already voted, early voting. I voted for Spanberger for governor. I voted for you for attorney general.”

Interestingly, this marks Dave’s first time voting in person, highlighting how engaged he feels this election. Despite their collaboration on the campaign trail, Miyares’ message to voters reflects the competitive nature of Virginia as a battleground state. Democrats are keen to reclaim both the governor’s office and the attorney general’s position.

This shift was made more noticeable after President Donald Trump, during a recent call to Virginia voters, didn’t mention Earl Sears, solely emphasizing support for Miyares: “Go out tomorrow and vote for Jason Miyares. This is very important,” Trump said. His message was filled with statements encouraging voters to pick Republicans across the board.

As Election Day approaches, voters across Virginia and other states are set to make impactful decisions in races that could affect the upcoming midterm elections in 2026.

Earl Sears is currently the lieutenant governor under Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin, who cannot run for a second consecutive term due to state law. Notably, she’s also a Marine Corps veteran.

On the other hand, Abigail Spanberger is a former congressman and had a career as a CIA operations officer. Both candidates are on the brink of making history as Virginia’s first female governor.
