Trump’s 60 Minutes Interview: A Negotiation Masterclass
President Trump’s recent interview on 60 Minutes with Norah O’Donnell showcased some interesting negotiating tactics—his responses seemed to leave her a bit stunned, making it hard for her to push back.
O’Donnell probed, “You’ve suggested that Xi Jinping won’t act militarily regarding Taiwan while you’re president. But what if he does? Would you order military action to defend Taiwan?”
Trump’s reply was intriguing: “We’ll know when it happens. And he understands the answer.” O’Donnell followed up, pressing for clarity.
“Why doesn’t he say that openly? What does he actually understand?” she inquired.
Trump was somewhat evasive, saying, “I can’t give away my secrets. I don’t want to be the one telling people exactly what will happen in those situations. They know, but I’m not just going to spill everything because they ask.” He then reiterated, “They understand what will happen, and he has publicly said through his associates, ‘We’re not going to do anything while Trump is president,’ because they’re aware of the potential results.”
Glenn Beck, the co-founder of Blaze Media, expressed admiration for Trump’s approach but criticized O’Donnell’s questioning. “The president would never say that. Can you imagine the absurdity of that question?” he remarked on “The Glenn Beck Program.”
Trump’s tactics appear to be yielding surprising results across the world, as Beck noted, “Democrats might not acknowledge it, but there’s a constant sentiment: ‘Wouldn’t it be great to have a skilled negotiator leading us, someone who runs the country like a business and knows how to make deals?'” Beck added, “I think we have the best negotiator ever. I can’t think of anyone better.”
O’Donnell also brought up the topic of ICE raids, asking about the images of ICE confronting young mothers and using tear gas in neighborhoods. “Have those actions gone too far?” she sought to clarify.
Trump replied coolly, “No, I don’t think they’ve gone far enough because the courts—liberal judges appointed by Biden and Obama—have held us back.” His tone suggested he felt justified in his position.
“So, you’re okay with those methods?” O’Donnell pressed, clearly taken aback.
“Yes, because we need to remove people. Many of them are criminals, including murderers. They’ve been sent back because they’re dangerous,” he stated. His insistence on targeting violent offenders seemed to resonate, reflected in Beck’s comment, “Seventy percent of Americans are in favor of ICE raids. That’s the latest poll, regardless of what mainstream media claims.”
