California’s Budget Priorities Favor Health Care for Undocumented Immigrants
California, under Democratic leadership, is set to prioritize health care for undocumented immigrants in its upcoming 2025-2026 budget, seemingly at the expense of state law enforcement resources.
As reported by various sources, Governor Gavin Newsom is aligning with trends seen in other Democratic states regarding the provision of health care to undocumented individuals. The Daily Caller highlighted that Newsom’s proposed budget allocates $348 million for law enforcement, while estimates suggest that the funding for health benefits could soar to $10 billion, significantly exceeding initial projections.
A report from the state’s Legislative Analysts Office (LAO) indicates that the anticipated costs for providing full health benefits are at least 35% higher than the $7.4 billion estimated in earlier budget proposals. Medi-Cal, which is California’s Medicaid program, offers extensive coverage—including doctor visits, medications, and dental care—for around 1.7 million undocumented individuals, making up about 11% of the enrollees. Such benefits alone could consume a notable portion of the Medi-Cal budget.
Further compounding the issue, it’s noted that various advocacy groups, linked to influential figures like George Soros, have been calling for reductions in police funding nationwide, particularly in left-leaning states.
Additionally, Oregon is reportedly planning to invest $500 million more in health care for undocumented immigrants than in state policing, reflecting a similar trend. While several states like California, Illinois, and Minnesota have introduced extensive health care programs for immigrants in recent years, some are now reconsidering these ambitious plans due to soaring costs.
Three states, which initially embraced comprehensive health benefits for undocumented immigrants, are starting to retract their commitments as expenses have exceeded expectations. California, in particular, has witnessed rising costs that have prompted a reevaluation of its funding strategy.
In a related note, Congressman Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) acknowledged that part of the recent government shutdown discussions revolves around the issue of providing taxpayer-funded health care to those undocumented individuals. Reports also suggest growing frustration among police forces in Democratic-controlled areas regarding the focus on undocumented immigrants, amidst the available funding challenges.
