Alex Soros Endorses Socialist Mayoral Candidate in New York
Alex Soros, the son of philanthropist George Soros, spoke with the New York Times about his decision to vote for Zoran Mamdani, the Socialist Party candidate for New York mayor.
“I was proud to support and vote for the Democratic mayoral candidate,” Soros stated in an email on Election Day.
Alex Soros is the heir to the Open Society Foundations, which his father established. George Soros has been a significant backer of progressive campaigns across the spectrum, from district attorney races to federal elections. Alex is set to take on the role of chairman of the nonprofit, valued at $25 billion, in 2022.
Could 2025 Mark a Socialist Turn?
Alex’s endorsement aligns with the foundation’s past financial support; reports suggest they’ve contributed $37 million over the last decade to groups that supported Mamdani’s nomination this election cycle.
Coming from New York, Alex Soros’ backing of Mamdani isn’t all that surprising, especially considering how pivotal the New York mayoral race is in the broader picture of upcoming elections. The race features Mamdani against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who, after losing in the Democratic primary, is now running as an independent, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
In addition to the New York race, the 2025 election cycle includes notable gubernatorial contests in New Jersey and Virginia, along with a special election in California. California voters will decide on a measure regarding state legislative district redraws, a move that George Soros has notably funded with $10 million.
Interestingly, Alex Soros’ support for Mamdani contrasts sharply with the ongoing criticism from former President Trump, who has labeled the Soros family’s contributions to progressive causes as harmful, even referring to Mamdani as a “communist.” Trump’s communications have demanded an investigation into both George and Alex Soros.
Democrats’ Concerns Over Mamdani’s Rise
Recent reports indicate that some Democrats are becoming nervous about the possibility of a Mamdani victory. Mamdani, who recently accepted an endorsement from United Bodega of America in the Bronx, is viewed as a serious contender and reflects a growing leftist voice within New York politics.
Trump’s rhetoric following Alex Soros’ endorsement has included aggressive statements directed at the Soros family, claiming significant damage has been caused to the nation by their funding sources.
Fox News Digital has reached out to the Open Society Foundations for comments regarding Alex Soros’ endorsement but has not yet received a response.
