Cincinnati’s Mayoral Race Sees a New Candidate

Corey Bowman, the 36-year-old half-brother of Vice President J.D. Vance, announced his intention to run for mayor of Cincinnati after watching President Donald Trump’s second inauguration. In an earlier conversation, he expressed admiration for his brother, stating, “I look up to my brother not just as a political model, but as a role model, so I’m very inspired by him,” according to Politico.

Bowman aimed to tackle issues like the city’s “aging infrastructure,” unsafe streets, and financial mismanagement. “Government can’t solve everything,” he remarked during his campaign.

Despite his ambitions, Bowman faced an uphill battle. Cincinnati, which hasn’t had a Republican mayor since 1971, clearly demonstrated a preference for the status quo. In preliminary results from the Hamilton County Board of Elections, Democratic incumbent Mayor Aftab Purewal won decisively, securing over 78% of the vote compared to Bowman’s roughly 22%. In the May primary, Bowman managed to capture just 13% of the votes to qualify for the general election.

Following the election, Bowman commented, “Please pray for our leadership. We need prayers for our cities. We want our cities to thrive. As I’ve consistently said, national politics don’t translate seamlessly into local elections. We need to unite, not divide, for our cities to succeed.”

While Bowman was proud of his family ties, he focused his campaign on local issues. Conversely, Pureval appeared to position the campaign as a referendum on the Trump administration. During the Oct. 9 mayoral debate, Bowman identified himself as a “MAGA representative,” asserting that people either support Trump’s policies or they don’t.

Pureval, who began his term in January 2022, criticized the Republican approach, referring to Bowman’s supporters as “MAGA extremists.” In May, he highlighted the importance of Cincinnati remaining a sanctuary city and a top destination for global talent.

After the election defeat, Bowman called for unity and emphasized a message of faith, saying, “You know that government can’t solve everything, but the solution to everything is a relationship with Jesus Christ. For those who haven’t given their heart to Jesus or considered it, I encourage you to give it a try.”

Bowman was not alone in experiencing electoral setbacks; several Republicans faced disappointing outcomes in recent elections, including Virginia’s Winsome Earl Sears and New Jersey’s Jack Ciattarelli.
