An art teacher is accused of filming himself stabbing three individuals, resulting in one death, shortly after he had distributed Halloween candy to local children, as reported by authorities.
Matthew Renier, 33, who teaches at Monument Academy in El Paso County, was discovered “naked and covered in blood” while holding his 2-year-old child when police arrived at a house in Colorado Springs on Friday night following a domestic disturbance call.
The little child was “present, watching and crying” during the disturbing incident, the affidavit notes.
Upon their arrival, officers found three individuals suffering from severe stab wounds, including the child’s uncle, who later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Two women also sustained life-threatening injuries.
Though the documents didn’t clarify Renier’s relationship with the victims, he was reportedly seen engaging with neighbors just hours prior, handing out candy.
Renier claimed he acted in “self-defense,” describing the situation as a “three-on-one assault” without providing any context regarding what had provoked the others to attack him.
Cellphone footage recorded in “selfie mode” depicted him shouting that he had been strangled, yet he seemed able to move freely. Disturbing images of the victim and blood splattered on the bedroom walls were also revealed in the affidavit.
Earlier, on September 26, police had visited the same residence and spoke with a woman who indicated she intended to file charges.
Officials with the Lewis Palmer School District confirmed Renier’s role as an art teacher at Monument Academy. He also coached junior varsity soccer at Palmer Ridge High School but was subsequently dismissed. The district expressed their cooperation with law enforcement in the investigation.
“This news is heartbreaking for our entire school community,” stated Colin Vinchatl, Executive Director of Monument Academy. He emphasized that the safety and well-being of students, families, and staff are their top priorities and that support would be offered to those affected.
