Jeffries accuses Republicans of causing the shutdown while CNN host challenges Democrats' position

Government Shutdown Debate Heats Up

During a discussion on Tuesday, CNN anchor Dana Bash challenged House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries as the conversation turned to the ongoing push for a government shutdown by President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

Jeffries asserted, “Donald Trump and the Republican Party are responsible for this government shutdown and are unwilling to reopen it.” He highlighted that in the past 35 days, Trump has been more engaged in golfing and conversing with foreign entities like Hamas and the Chinese Communist Party than working with Democrats, who, according to him, represent a significant portion of the country. The crux of Jeffries’ argument was that they need to confront the health crisis they’ve caused.

Bash responded by pointing out that Jeffries and his party had voted against measures to open the government. She noted, “I understand you want certain things, but the situation is more complex than that.”

Jeffries countered that the public knows who is to blame for the shutdown, insisting that Republicans had the power to end it since they control both the House and the Senate, alongside the presidency, yet have not acted.

In the broader discussion about the government shutdown, he outlined the Democratic stance, particularly their opposition to a Senate measure related to Obamacare subsidies.

Amidst these debates, Jeffries also criticized Trump’s administration for letting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits expire and, when asked if it would be wise for Democrats to support a Republican funding bill, he dismissed the notion.

“The administration has previously found significant funds for different cases, like bailing out a foreign leader. If they can do that, they should be able to find the resources to prevent millions of Americans from going hungry,” he remarked.
