Former Art Teacher Charged with Murder Following Fatal Stabbing Incident
A former art teacher from Colorado is facing several charges, including first-degree murder, stemming from a stabbing incident captured on video Friday night.
Matthew Renier, as he has been identified, is also charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and child abuse. On that night, an unknown woman called 911 to report a domestic disturbance, followed shortly by Renier, who indicated he was involved.
Responding to the call, officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department arrived at a residence in El Paso County and discovered three victims with stab wounds. While both male and female victims were found unresponsive, another female victim was partially responsive. Renier was at the scene, naked and covered in blood, holding a 2-year-old boy.
All three victims were taken to nearby hospitals, where the male victim sadly succumbed to his injuries. Fortunately, the child was confirmed to be uninjured. Renier sustained deep cuts to his left hand and claimed he had been bitten.
During his police interview, Renier stated that he had been choked during the altercation and suggested that one of his attackers had made inappropriate contact with him. Interestingly, a forensic nurse examiner noted that he hadn’t received a medical evaluation at the hospital. Renier also alleged that the altercation was recorded on his phone, asserting it demonstrated he had acted in self-defense against a three-on-one attack.
When police reviewed the video, they informed Renier that it did not corroborate his claims of self-defense, as he appeared able to escape the alleged strangulation multiple times.
Local resident Susan Reynolds expressed her shock at the event, mentioning how hard it was to comprehend such violence in their typically quiet neighborhood. “I literally cried every day. It’s so shocking that it’s hard to even imagine that something like this could happen. Everyone is really devastated,” she said.
Renier, 33, was employed as an art teacher at Monument Academy but was terminated on Sunday. A spokesperson from the school referred to the incident as “heartbreaking.” Renier is set to appear in court Monday, according to reports.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has not yet responded to requests for further comment.
