Jelly Roll Claims He Felt Criminalized While Shopping
Jelly Roll has spoken out about his experience at a Louis Vuitton store in Sydney, where he felt he was treated like a “criminal.” In a social media post on Wednesday, the Grammy-nominated artist shared that the staff seemed to suspect him of attempting to steal.
Wearing a backward cap, he remarked, “Hey, Louis Vuitton in Sydney treated us like we were trying to rob the place.” He added, “I’ve never been looked at like this much like a criminal… The last time I looked this bad, well, I actually was a bad criminal.”
Representatives for Louis Vuitton haven’t responded to requests for comments on the incident.
The artist, known for his hit “Save Me,” has been candid about his past issues with the law and his battle with addiction. In a recent interview, he recounted an incident from when he was just 16 years old, when he was arrested and charged as an adult with aggravated robbery and drug possession. He spent over a year in prison and was later placed on probation for seven years.
Reflecting on this past, Jelly Roll emphasized, “This was a heinous crime.” He explained that he feels a sense of responsibility to remember the mistakes of his youth. “This is a grown man looking back at a 16-year-old boy who made the worst decision of his life. Thankfully, no one was hurt,” he noted.
In a significant life shift, Jelly Roll revealed that the birth of his daughter motivated him to turn his life around. He shared, “I realized I was sitting in a prison cell eating $17 honey buns and potato chips.” He expressed regret about his previous life choices, admitting, “I was the lowest common denominator in life. I was a crack dealer. I was a terrible, terrible human being. I thought, ‘I’ve got to solve this.’”
Previously, in an interview, he stated that overcoming his challenging background significantly shaped who he is today. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without that experience,” he reflected. “It gave me strength, it gave me my voice.” He aims to use his music as a way to help others and give back, highlighting the importance of reaching out to those in need.
