Caitlan Collins Defends CNN’s Trump Town Hall

CNN anchor Caitlan Collins stated on Wednesday that her role is not about trying to “bring down” President Donald Trump. This was in response to the criticism surrounding a town hall event she hosted in 2023 with the former president.

In a discussion on his podcast with comedian Hasan Minhaj, Collins addressed the motivations behind the town hall, which some suggested aimed at regaining Republican viewers. She asserted that the event was in line with CNN’s typical town hall format, emphasizing that Trump has been upfront about his plans for a potential re-election.

Despite the backlash from various liberals, Collins maintained that it’s important to report the reality of Trump’s possible candidacy.

“What that moment illustrated was there’s still considerable support for Donald Trump,” Collins noted. “It may have been uncomfortable for those who were already wary of him, but that’s how it is. Our responsibility isn’t to fluff the narrative to fit what people want to hear.”

She went on to clarify that her aim is merely to present the truth as it is: “The Town Hall demonstrated that my job isn’t about undermining Trump. I’m a reporter and an anchor.” Collins emphasized that she focused on fact-checking and challenging Trump during the event, rather than considering CNN’s audience.

She noted that the responses from attendees gave a glimpse into the possible dynamics of the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

“I think anyone watching probably won’t be shocked that Mr. Trump was the clear Republican candidate in that scenario,” Collins stated. “He was re-elected and back in the spotlight.”

Diving into the discussion topics, Trump spoke about various issues, including the events surrounding January 6 and claims regarding the 2020 election’s legitimacy. At one point, he referred to Collins in a derogatory manner, which received applause from some in the crowd.

Interestingly, in a 2024 Elle interview, Collins suggested that Trump would have drawn attention regardless of the network involved. She added, “You can’t overlook someone who’s the front-runner for the Republican nomination.”

Collins has continued to defend her role in the town hall, even facing pushback from critics on the left.
