Kristin Chenoweth Reflects on Fan Backlash Over Tribute to Charlie Kirk
Actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth has opened up about the emotional toll following fan backlash to her tribute for Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, stating it “almost broke” her.
“It was tough for me. But I dealt with it, so I’m not going to answer any questions about it. You probably know, because you know my heart,” she shared in an interview with a magazine.
Chenoweth was addressing criticism from fans who accused her of betraying the LGBTQ+ community after she expressed her sadness over Kirk’s assassination. Her comments followed a tribute she posted on Instagram, expressing disappointment and offering condolences for Kirk’s family, saying she didn’t always agree with him but appreciated some of his viewpoints.
“I know where he is right now. Heaven. Still,” she added, concluding her message with a heartbroken emoji.
When pressed further about the controversy during an interview with NY1’s Frank DiLella, she acknowledged the backlash but didn’t delve deeply into it, stating the situation “almost destroyed” her. “I had a moment of human reflection,” said Chenoweth, who noted that her comments hurt some people, which deeply affected her as well.
She emphasized that her identity as a Christian and an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community may seem contradictory to some, but it’s a core part of who she is.
In contrast, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who also faced scrutiny for her comments on Kirk’s murder, seemed to backtrack, stating she never wished Kirk happiness and that her words had been misinterpreted.
