Incident Involving President Sheinbaum
On Wednesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced her intention to pursue legal action against a man who groped her on the street the day before.
Footage of the unsettling encounter, which has circulated on social media, shows a man approaching Sheinbaum from behind, wrapping his arms around her and kissing her neck. Fortunately, another individual, later recognized by Sheinbaum as her aide, Juan Jose Ramírez Mendoza, stepped in to intervene.
During a press conference, Sheinbaum, who is Mexico’s first female president, stated that the man appeared intoxicated and only realized the situation after Ramírez Mendoza intervened.
“I decided to press charges because this is an experience I’ve had as a woman, and it’s something that many women face in this country,” she said. She recalled similar harassment she faced on public transport at the age of 12.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada reported on Tuesday night via social media that the man had been apprehended by the Secretariat of Security and Civil Protection.
Brugada emphasized, “If they touch the president, they touch all of us.”
According to reports, police have linked the man to two additional harassment cases targeting women in Mexico.
Sheinbaum mentioned that she and her team had chosen to walk from the National Palace to the Ministry of Education to avoid heavy traffic. The specialized military agency that used to support the president’s security was dissolved by Sheinbaum’s predecessor, former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
She called on state authorities to enhance protections for women to facilitate the reporting of assaults, asserting that “women’s personal space must not be violated.”
A disturbing survey in 2021 revealed that nearly half (49.7%) of Mexican women aged 15 and older reported experiencing sexual violence in their lives, while 34.7% reported facing physical violence. Alarmingly, 99.7% of these incidents went unreported, highlighting a significant issue in addressing violence against women in the country.
