Democrats achieve significant success in the 2025 elections by prioritizing the economy and expenses.

The economic challenges that had seemed to spell trouble for Democrats in the upcoming 2024 election appear to have actually helped them in this year’s important races.

After inflation concerns drove Republicans to regain control of the White House and the Senate while maintaining a majority in the House last year, Democrats celebrated significant victories in two gubernatorial contests in 2025. They attributed this success to a strong focus on “affordability,” which became a central topic in their campaigning.

Megan Meehan-Draper, from the Democratic Governors Association, noted that the winning candidates—Rep. Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey and former Rep. Abigail Spanberger of Virginia—outperformed expectations by concentrating on economic issues during their campaigns. Their strategy involved consistent discussions around economic subjects.

The data supports this approach. For instance, a Fox News Voter Poll conducted just before the election indicated that nearly half of Virginia voters prioritized the economy, and these individuals mostly backed Spanberger. In New Jersey, economy-related issues were cited as the second most important concern after taxes, and Sherrill won that demographic by a substantial margin.

Ken Martin, the Democratic National Committee Chair, pointed to victories in New Jersey, Virginia, and several battleground states, saying that Democratic candidates maintained a focus on affordability and cost of living—issues resonating with voters from various backgrounds.

However, some Republicans are suggesting that Democrats may be overstating their recent electoral success. Vice President J.D. Vance expressed skepticism, calling it unwise to draw broad conclusions from results in predominantly blue states.

Yet, he also acknowledged the continued importance of economic issues, particularly inflation. Vance stated, “We will strive for a decent and affordable life in America, and that’ll be our standard moving forward.”

Ryan Williams, a seasoned Republican strategist, reflected on the broader inflationary context, noting that since the pandemic, rising prices have impacted how voters perceive the current administration. While he recognized that President Biden has faced challenges with inflation, he also pointed out that voters generally hold the party in power accountable during off-year elections. “Republicans must sharpen their messages,” he advised.

Similarly, Democratic strategist Chris Moyer highlighted how the Democrats have effectively pivoted their messaging since 2024 to emphasize affordability—covering essentials like healthcare and living expenses. This focus has clearly struck a chord with voters concerned about the cost of living.

Moyer further noted that candidates who won this year—even those on different ideological sides—shared a common theme of addressing costs, which unites the Democratic party under the broad banner of tackling affordability.

Looking ahead to the next midterm elections, Moyer believes that the strategy seen in the 2025 elections could be a blueprint for Democrats aiming to reclaim Congress. The current results, he asserts, signify a model that could resonate across the nation.
