United Airlines provides refunds to travelers amid government shutdown

Flight Delays Expected Due to Government Shutdown

FAA Administrator Brian Bedford has raised concerns about significant flight delays resulting from a shortage of air traffic controllers caused by the ongoing government shutdown. As Thanksgiving approaches, these delays may worsen.

For customers of United Airlines who have booked flights during this shutdown, CEO Scott Kirby recently informed staff in a memo that they will qualify for refunds. This comes as the FAA and Department of Transportation announced that 40 airports across the nation will reduce their schedules starting Friday due to these circumstances.

Kirby noted in the memo that “customers traveling during this period will be eligible for a refund if they do not wish to fly, even if their flight is not affected. This includes customers with non-refundable and basic economy tickets.” It’s worth mentioning, however, that long-haul international flights and inter-hub routes are not impacted by these FAA schedule reductions.

In light of the government shutdown, Kirby indicated that the airline will adjust schedules to prioritize regional and domestic flights that don’t connect between hubs. He also mentioned that the airline plans to communicate with passengers about changes through their apps, websites, and notifications.

Despite these schedule adjustments, United Airlines and its United Express partners will continue to operate approximately 4,000 flights per day, ensuring customers can still reach their destinations, according to Kirby.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy indicated that the ongoing shutdown—now in its record 36th day—is due to air traffic control safety concerns. He stated that schedule cuts could be reversed if there is agreement among Democrats to reopen the government.

This government shutdown is the longest in U.S. history, forcing around 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 TSA employees to continue working without pay.
