Many Americans view Paris as the ultimate destination for romance and elegance, a city where art, architecture, and style merge into something almost mythical. With portrayals in films like “Casablanca” and shows like “Sex and the City,” as well as Netflix’s “Emily in Paris,” the city has long been seen as the perfect setting for love and new beginnings. However, this allure isn’t confined to the screen; Paris is a vibrant city that continually inspires admiration and creativity.
This autumn, that allure faced a challenge when news broke about a remarkable heist at the Louvre. Four masked individuals managed to steal nine priceless items in just seven minutes during daylight hours. The robbery, which took place on October 19, has prompted comparisons to movies like “Ocean’s Eleven,” indicating that even in a city renowned for its sophistication, drama is never far away.
Authorities have apprehended three of the suspected thieves, but an estimated $100 million worth of stolen treasures remains unaccounted for. Reports suggest two suspects made off with jewelry while a third waited outside on a scooter for a quick escape.
This isn’t the Louvre’s first brush with scandal. Back in 1911, Vincenzo Perugia, an Italian handyman, famously took the Mona Lisa, slipping it under his smock as he left the museum unnoticed. Once underappreciated, the painting gained massive fame overnight, becoming the world’s most recognized artwork by the time it was recovered in Florence two years later. This incident exemplifies how Paris nurtures both beauty and legend.

Our journey took us to the Shangri-La Paris, a former residence of Napoleon’s great-nephew, Prince Roland Bonaparte. Constructed in 1896, this elegant palace reflects Belle Époque luxury, with its ornate marble staircase and gilded ceilings that hark back to its grand past.
“Roland Bonaparte actually built his bedroom opposite the Eiffel Tower,” our guide Anthony Schmidt noted. “He thought it was an eyesore.”
How things have changed! That very tower now sparkles nightly through the terrace windows of the Shangri-La, making it one of the city’s most photographed sights.
“Paris is like an open-air museum,” he remarked. Colin Boyd, director at World of Travel, encourages visitors to delve deeper than the typical tourist experience. The team did just that, residing in the Horizon House, a chic Parisian mansion in the 16th arrondissement. Engaging in daily life— from morning markets to evening strolls along the Seine—imparted a more personal rhythm of Paris, rooted in connection rather than mere spectacle.

During Fashion Week, we observed how the city defines global trends, from the classic houses of Chanel and Dior to the lively streetwear found in Le Marais. Here, fashion transcends seasons; it’s a cultural dialogue, worn like art.

Venues like Shang Palace, Mamma Mia Paris, and Verde showcased the intricate balance of traditional and innovative cuisine, each meal feeling like a tribute to the senses.
