James Carville Claims He Would Wager Heavily That Democrats Will Expand the Supreme Court If They Come Back to Power

Carville Predicts Democratic Power Shift in 2028

Democratic strategist James Carville expressed his belief on “Political War Room” that the Democratic Party will regain power by 2028 and may consider increasing the number of Supreme Court justices.

In a previous discussion, Carville indicated that should Democrats gain full control of the federal government, it might become necessary to expand the Supreme Court from nine to thirteen justices. This commentary was directed toward the court’s conservative members and hinted at a potentially unavoidable outcome.

“I’m telling you what’s going to happen,” Carville said. “In 2028, we’re going to have a Democrat in the White House. We all know that. A Democratic majority in the House and Senate is also coming. The president is likely to announce a special commission on Supreme Court reform, appointing esteemed individuals.” He went on to predict that this body would suggest increasing the number of justices.

“This is in the cards,” he emphasized. “They’re going to win. A group of top legal experts will recommend adding justices, and both the Democratic House and Senate will back it. Ultimately, a Democratic president will sign off on it because restoring the public’s trust in the Supreme Court is essential. Keep this in mind; I would wager significant money on it,” he added.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has urged his party to eliminate the filibuster, though Senate Republicans have been wary. Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed concerns that if the filibuster were abolished and Republicans regained power, Democrats might “pack the Supreme Court, endorse unrestricted abortion, and federalize elections.”

Interestingly, only about 29% of Americans back the idea of adding justices to the Supreme Court, according to a recent poll from the Annenberg Center for Public Policy at the University of Pennsylvania. Despite this, some Democrats, like former Attorney General Eric Holder and Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett, continue to advocate for the proposal.

The party has voiced frustration with recent Supreme Court rulings concerning issues like abortion rights, national injunctions, the Second Amendment, and guidelines for child gender reassignment.

During the 2020 presidential campaign, both former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris avoided committing to expanding the Supreme Court. Ultimately, Biden chose not to pursue changes to the court during his administration.
